DIXON P. DOWNEY (BUSINESS MAN. OWNER OF A PLASTICS FACTORY THAT PRODUCED THE FIRST HULA-HOOPS). - A 1957 Fishing and Travel Log Book. In The Bahamas Fishing for Bonefish, Sharks, Barracuda, Albacore, Allison Tuna, and Other Species, on Board the Boat Peppercorn.The boat Peppercorn, owned by Dixon P. Downey, with a length of 41 feet, a beam of 11 feet and a draft of 3.5 feet, and powered by two Chrysler engines; captained by R. H. Coleman and his crew, the boat left Nassau at 1900 on February 23, 1957. The boat and crew traveled to Spanish Wells, Harbour Island, Hatchetts Bay, Rock Sound, Allen’s Cay, Norman’s Cay, Andros, Fresh Creek, Coral Harbour, Joulter Cay, back to Fresh Creek and Coal Harbour, and concluded the trip on March 23, 1957. The log entries total 31 pp. in pencil and they are consistently detailed - time - chart course - course steered - wind, sea conditions, length of travel each day, fishing, etc. The fishing (usually bait and lures) for Bonefish and Barracuda mostly; the owner and crew were somewhat successful. There is a black and white photo of a boat similar to the Peppercon laid-in. The logbook is bound in green cloth with yellow title on the front cover and measures 8 x 10 inches. In very good condition.
