A speech in Congress revisiting the politics of the Civil War, accusing Democrats of subverting the Union and undermining the Republicans, among others, asserting that in their quest for peace, the Democrats damaged the United States, indirectly causing needless loss of life. Sargent was a US Representative and Senator from California, serving as a Republican. He was known as a vocal supporter of the Chinese Exclusion Act (Wikipedia). GOOD condition. Pamphlet unopened along the top edge. Large faint dampstain present. Some soiling, staining and foxing present, with offsetting along the extremities. Small tear in the center of the piece, slightly affecting text. Good .
