Brian Hollingsworth and his colleagues escort the reader through the countries of the world, along narrow-gauge, metre-gauge and standard-gauge tracks, over bridges and viaducts, through tunnels, across deserts and up the sides of mountains. The history and modern workings of urban rapid transit systems, national and international railroad systems are described in vivid detail complete with relevant statistics: gauges, lengths and heights of bridges and tunnels, passengers and freight carried, rolling stock, locomotive power, percentage electrified and so on.
