Printed wraps. 56 pp. A report on the Connecticut State Reform School in Meriden, for the year 1884, discussing improvements and industry at the school, methods used to run the school, including a look at housing, water supply, food and clothing, as well as instructions and religious exercises at the school. With many statistical tables documenting crimes committed, ages, etc. The Connecticut State Reform School in Meriden was formed in 1854 in an effort to prevent problems arising from treating juvenile offenders as adults. The school employed a varying scale of punishments, ranging from reproaching the offender, confiscating a toy, imposing chores, to solitary confinement and sometimes beating (Spigel, OLR Research Report, online source). GOOD condition. Moderate soiling, uneven fading, and some browning to the covers. Some creasing, with minor chipping and tearing along the extremities. Corner tips curled. Dampstain affecting the lower corner of the rear cover and last several pages. A few pages unopened in the interior. Text block toned. Good .
