Webster, Daniel - The Austro-Hungarian Question. Correspondence between Mr. Hulsemann, Austrian Charge D'Affaires, and Mr. Webster, Secretary of State of the United States

Washington, Gideon and Co. Printers, 1851. First Edition. Pamphlet. First edition. Printed wraps. 23 pp. A piece consisting of two letters, one from Hulsemann and a lengthy reply from Daniel Webster. Hulsemann asserts that the United States was overstepping its bounds by sending Mr. Mann to Hungary to witness the events during the Hungarian struggle for independence, accusing him of being a spy and portraying Austria in an unfavorable light. Webster responds to these allegations, declaring that the United States has the freedom to do what it wishes, and countering the allegations that Mann was a spy. Provenance: Reads 'For Counsel W. Winthrop. With Mr. Webster's Respects.' at the top of the title page. Assumed to not be in Daniel Webster's hand, most likely given to Winthrop by another. FAIR condition, slightly ex-library, with two embossments from the Massachusetts Historical Society present, on on the front cover and another to a page in the interior. Moderate to heavy dampstain affecting most of the upper and lower portions of the pamphlet, leaving an area clean running diagonal through the center. Moderat soiling with uneven fading, minor staining and creasing. A few pencil notations to the front cover. Minor scattered soiling in the interior, with the aforementioned dampstain affecting the pages. Sabin 33650. Fair .
