Volodymyr Ianiv (1908 - 1991) was a Ukrainian poet, psychologist, scientist, editor, and political figure. He would be persecuted and arrested several times, spending years in prisons and concentration camps. After immigrating to Germany he would serve as rector of the Ukrainian Free University and as a deputy chairman of the Shevchenko Scientific Society. The book was illustrated by Halyna Mazepa (1910 - 1995) - graphic artist, illustrator, painter, and daughter of Isaak Mazepa, the Prime Minister of Ukrainian People’s Republic. After her two sons and her mother were killed during the American bombing of Prague she immigrated - first to Germany and later to Venezuela, where she worked as a producer for Bolivar Films and book and magazine illustrator.
