- Which Card Is the Larger? Mystify Your Friends. An IllusionS. l. Monarch Foods, 1925. First Edition. Two, die-cut, card stock pieces + original envelope; cards - 4 x 2 1/4, lithographed recto, text and photographic images to verso (of one of them); minor wear to edges and light off-setting; very good or better condition. Envelope - 4 1/2 x 2 1/2; beige stock, printed in dark-blue; a rubbed spot with glue residue to front panel; very good- condition. A wonderful advertisement for Monarch Foods, the cards featured various company products, arranged in such a way, which created an optical illusion of one of them seemingly looking smaller than the other. One of the cards also included photographs of three of the Monarch factories, in Rochester, MN, Salem, OR, and Chicago, Ill. Monarch Foods, nowadays an entity of US Foods, traced its origins to the Reid Murdoch Company, which was founded in 1853 to provision Gold Rush wagons heading west, and produced a variety of canned foods, including olive oil, vegetables, coffee, candies, etc. Very good .
