Cisneros, Jose - Cover for American Southwestern Literature Journal [Signed/Captioned by the Illustrator]

S. l. (El Paso [?]): By the illustrator, 1960. Softcover. A monochromatic silkscreen print on heavy beige stock, n. d. (1950s [?]); single sheet, 12 1/2 x 9 1/2; a few small creases and nicks to edges; faint spot to right margin; very good condition. Captioned and signed in pencil by Jose Cisneros beneath the illustration. Though the particular issue of the journal has not been identified, the beautiful cover fully illustrates Cisneros’ mastery of his art. It depicts a stylized, oval border made out of barbed wire, which encloses faces of various professions and races, including a priest, an African American soldier, a Native American warrior, and several others. Jose Cisneros (1910 - 2009) was born in Mexico, but lived most of his life in the US after his family had been displaced by the Mexican Revolution. He was a self-taught, color-blind, brilliant, and world-renowned illustrator of Southwestern, Mexican, and Spanish history, most famous for his pen-and-ink drawings of horses and their riders. In 1991, he was knighted by King Juan Carlos of Spain for his contributions to understanding Spanish history and in 2002 he was awarded the National Humanities Medal by President Bush. Ill.: 0. 2.
