Mykhailo Kotsiubynskyi (pseud. Zakhar Kozub) (1864 - 1913) was one of the finest Modernist Ukrainian writers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Many of his early books reflected his populist ideas and the later ones - his views on the tsarist social oppression of Ukraine. The current book (Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors), originally published in 1911 and here printed in a DP (displaced persons) camp in Germany, was one of his most artistic works, centered around Hutsul life and largely drawn on folk legends and pagan demonology (Hutsuls are an ethno-cultural group in the Carpathian Mountains in Ukraine and Northern Romania).
