Book, A System of Geography Popular and Scientific or a Physical Political and Statistical Account of the World and its Various Divisions by James Bell published by Archibald Fullarton Glasgow; Tait Edinburgh; Curry Dublin and Simpkin & Marshall and Orr London 1832. A 1st edition in six volumes size 22 by 14 cm. In original full leather binding with gold decoration to spines marbled endpapers etc. Illustrated by a complete set of maps and other engravings (which includes 42 folding maps and an engraving of the world's major mountains that appears to have the height of an unnamed Everest to within a few hundred feet). Recent restoration to heads of the spines. Minor foxing mainly to endpapers which also bear the stamp of the Brazilian consulate in Cardiff and to reverse and borders of some of the engravings & maps. Sympathetic restoration to the heads and feet of the spines. Dedication in ink to free front endpaper of Vol.I dated 1946 but more interestingly there is also a dedication in pencil to the front endpaper of Vol. II dated 1836. A fascinating set in Good condition. Images available.
