In 1941 he was captured by the Nazis and held as prisoner of war. Later, he immigrated - first to Germany and then to the US, where he worked at Oklahoma and New York Universities. Subtitled "Literaturovedcheskie Problemy I Analizy," his current book contains a collection of his novels, essays, articles, and short stories - previously published in various journals and other publications and dedicated to analyzing the styles and works of five major Russian writers - Babel, Pasternak, Solzhenitsyn, Bulgakov, and Akhmadulina.
