Book condition : very good. - Later, augmented, rare Dutch edition of the famous history of Spain by the Jesuit Juan de Mariana (1536-1623), originally published in 1602. Mariana is well known by his treatise: De rege et regis (1592), but many French critics took Mariana's treatise to be an ill-disguised appeal to the public for the assassination of Henri III, and the Jesuit order took pains to correct the book and reprimand Mariana. The real assassination in 1589 of the indolent king only made matters worse. In 1610 he was subsequently condemned to home imprisonment for treason.
