A very good, untrimmed set, in overall fine condition, a bit foxed in places. ~ FIRST EDITION. Lawrence John Lumley Dundas, Marquess of Zetland (1876-1971), a British politician, Secretary of State for India in the late 1930s. Beside with China, his travelogue deals also with Japan, Korea, Manchuria. The map, well preserved, appears here in two separate parts, one loosely inserted, probably due to error in trimming the bookblock before binding. TIMO-5 OUT .

The first edition.Complete in two volumes.In the original publisher's harlequin binding (vol 2 is a different colour to vol 1 and is meant to be).The travel account of Lawrence Dundas, the Earl of Ronaldshay and 2nd Marquess of Zetland.Dundas travelled widely across Asia whilst the aide-de-camp to Lord Curzon, the Viceroy of India. In these two volumes Dundas vividly described China and Japan as they were at the beginning of the twentieth century, a fascinating exploration.Volume I illustrated with a frontispiece, one folding map, and twenty-nine plates. Collated, complete.Volume II illustrated with a frontispiece, and twenty-nine plates. Collated, complete.Dundas later became an expert on India, serving as the Secretary of State for India from 1935-1940. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, smart. Very minor bumping to the head and tail of the spines and to the extremities. A little rubbing to the joints and spines. Some light marks to the boards and spines, a little heavier to the head of the boards of Volume II. Rear board of Volume II is a little bowed.
