A clinical psychologist then at Worcester State Hospital, Rosenzweig (1907-2004) had sent Margaret Mead the prospectus for his proposed Journal of Experimental Psychopathology asking her to serve on the editorial board. Benedict replies: "Dr. Mead is in Malaysia on a three year field trip and I am forwarding your letter and prospectus to her. It will be at least two months before her reply can reach you but I feel sure that she will be delighted with the plans for the prospective journal." Weight: 0.1 ounces = 4 grams. Size: 10.5 x 8.0 inches = 26.3 x 20.1cm. Signed with her clear signature "Ruth Benedict". A student of Franz Boas, Benedict became one of the best-known and most widely read 20th century anthropologists. Continuing Boas's tradition, she argued for cultural relativism. Her 1934 book Patterns of Culture was translated into 14 languages and remained standard reading in American anthropology courses for many years. Her 1946 book on Japan The Chrysanthemum and the Sword popularized the distinction between shame and guilt cultures and helped shape American ideas about Japanese culture during the occupation of Japan. She was closely associated with Margaret Mead throughout her professional career. Binding: PB.
