RICE JANE; STEFAN DZIEMIANOWICZ & JIM ROCKHILL (EDITORS) ALLEN KOSZOWSKI (ARTIST),
THE IDOL OF THE FLIES AND OTHER STORIES.
USA Midnight House 2003 First Thus Private Press Hard Cover Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall Fine/Fine/J Fine 372 pages. The first complete collection of all the weird fiction and macabre tales of Jane Rice: 22 horror and weird fiction short stories in all. This collection also includes The Stalkers which sees print here for the first time. Also A Difficult Subject has been revised by Jane Rice by adding a new supernatural element. Eleven of these stories have previously only seen print since their initial printing in the pulps of yesteryear such as UNKNOWN WORLDS UNKNOWN ALFRED HITCHCOCK'S MYSTERY MAGAZINE CHARM and the still present MAGAZINE OF FANTASY AND SCIENCE FICTION; the remaining 9 stories have been reprinted in scattered anthologies over the years. The Idol of the Flies is a massive retrospective of Jane Rice's sixty-year career in weird fiction. From her earliest stories for John Campbell's Unknown Worlds through the 1950's tales written for Charm and The Magazine of Fantasy & Science-Fiction to the recent novelette The Sixth Dog all of Ms. Rice's macabre fiction is collected in this book. Editors Stefan Dziemianowicz and Jim Rockhill have done a splendid job of tracking down stories from a wide variety of sources. Ms. Rice herself did revisions on several pieces to restore previously excised supernatural elements. Rumor has long been rampant of missing Jane Rice stories written for Campell's Unknown Worlds. We're pleased to report that those stories have been found and while not restored exactly to their original form they now represent the author's preferred version. Edited by Stefan Dziemianowicz (who provides the introduction) & Jim Rockhill (who provides the afterword). Dust jacket art and interior frontis illustration of Jane Rice by Allen Koszowski. Limited to 510 numbered copies.
